Ask Amy: A mom ponders her quiet daughter

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:33:21 GMT

Dear Amy: We have a 15-year-old daughter who is very introverted. She is happiest being home alone. She has a group of friends she has known for about nine years, and the eight of them often do things together. As they have grown up the other girls have branched out into sports and other time-intensive hobbies, while my daughter prefers to spend time drawing and painting. She will go in on group activities, but usually only if her one best friend is there with her.Otherwise, she prefers to stay home.My husband has a similar introverted and loner personality.I, on the other hand, like to see friends and family a few times a week.I can’t help but feel anxious about her not having friends because it reminds me of feeling left out in my teen and young adult years. She truly seems not to seek others out.How can I relax and be sure that she isn’t me and that she is content with being more alone?— Concerned MomRelated ArticlesAsk Amy | Ask Amy: How do I avoid my creepy uncle? ...

If he dances well to whom fortune pipes, the player we call Harlow the Halo must be descended from Fred Astaire. Harlow’s good luck is unending. Meanwhile, we think Unlucky Louie once collided with a truck hauling mirrors. In a team match, both Louie and Harlow played at five clubs; they ruffed the spade opening lead in dummy. Harlow cashed the ace of diamonds, drew trumps and led the jack of diamonds. When the queen appeared from West, Harlow claimed an overtrick.“If East has the queen,” Louie grumbled to me, “Harlow goes down two.”BETTER PLAYLouie’s play was better: At Trick Two he led the ten of diamonds from dummy. West took his queen and led a trump, but Louie drew trumps and ran the diamonds, winning six trumps, four diamonds and a ruff in dummy. If West had led a second spade, Louie would ruff in dummy and could come to his jack of diamonds to draw trumps.Harlow’s play wins a little more than 50 percent of the time. Louie needed a 3-2 ...

Get ready to tailgate: A dream road trip to see every AP Top 25 team this season

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:33:21 GMT

AP’s dream college football road trip is back, starting earlier than ever before. To recap: The goal here is to map out a schedule of games worth traveling to during the upcoming season — with only two rules. First, we must see every team in the AP’s preseason Top 25 at least once. And second, the travel between games must be reasonable in the time available. Long drives are OK, but if you’re at a night game in Oregon, you’re not getting to SEC country for an 11 a.m. kickoff the next day.Safe travels!GAME 1: No. 13 Notre Dame vs. Navy (Aug. 26)Might as well start at the very beginning with the first FBS game of the entire season — in Dublin, Ireland. Brian Newberry coaches his first game after taking over at Navy following the firing of Ken Niumatalolo.GAME 2: No. 17 TCU vs. Colorado (Sept. 2)Hopefully the jet lag has worn off because Week 1 will be the toughest travel schedule of the trip. It begins with Deion Sanders’ debut as Colorado’s coach — on the...

In a report cosigned by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the District’s public schools’ latest statewide assessment numbers showed students made gains in both English and math. So, how did students do?Overall, the city’s public schools’ third through 12th grade students experienced a 2.6% gain in math and a 2.9% gain in English, according to results from the spring 2023 assessment.A third of students — 33.6% — are “meeting or exceeding expectations” in English and 21.8% of students achieved that same mark in math. The report noted that while no statewide assessments were given to students in 2020 or 2021, this year’s results remain lower than the 2019 results, alluding to the assumption that the shift to virtual learning during the pandemic harmed student achievement and is reflected in the results. The assessment ranks student’s academic achievements against the District’s “rig...
