BEIJING (AP) — A workshop built from steel sheets collapsed in southern China, killing six people and injuring three others, authorities said.An investigation is underway into the cause of Saturday’s accident in Guizhou province. The three injured people remained hospitalized as of late Saturday and there were no updates on their condition Sunday.Building collapses are not uncommon in China, where structures are sometimes thrown up without lawfully obtaining proper permits and safety standards are often ignored. The illegal addition of extra floors and failure to use reinforcement is often blamed for such disasters. An increase in the number of collapses of self-built buildings in recent years has prompted calls from Chinese leader Xi Jinping for additional checks to uncover weaknesses. In the worst such incident in recent years, a building collapse in central China in April 2022 killed 53 people. Additional floors had been added without permission or the use of proper construction m...

Wild’s Jonas Brodin week to week after reckless hit by Evander Kane

The Wild won’t exactly limp into Sunday’s game at Seattle, the last in a four-game road trip that already has taken them through Western Canada. But they’ll do so after being reminded that in some ways, they’re still the team that lost 11 of 13 games and got their head coach fired.Under John Hynes, the Wild found a new lease on life, another gear and a tweaked system that plays to their strengths, and it all showed during an impressive, four-game winning streak. The Wild outscored their opponents 18-5 overall, 9-1 in the first period, and never trailed. That changed in a 2-0 loss at Vancouver, the team’s first shutout loss of the season, and in Friday night’s 4-3 loss in Edmonton to the streaking Oilers.“We weren’t going to win all games to the end, right?” goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury said after making a season-high 36 saves against the Oilers. “Still need to progress, still need to learn from our mistakes and still need to get better and do John’s systems and thoughts.”A serious is...

Kickin’ It with Kiz: Why Heisman voters get it wrong and best candidates for MVP of NFL can’t win

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:27:51 GMT

I really hate the Heisman Trophy race has become a popularity contest among players that get the most attention. Some of the best players in college football play defense, but you never hear about them.Ron, free thinkerKiz: As a kid who first fell in love with sports through college football, I’m a guy that loves voting for the Heisman Trophy. But it frustrates me that being a quarterback is now almost a prerequisite for winning the award. In years past, I have voted for dominant defenders such as Will Anderson Jr. and Ndamukong Suh. While I think quarterback Jayden Daniels of Louisiana State is an intriguing NFL prospect who might look good in a Broncos uniform, the only finalist for this year’s award I seriously considered putting anywhere on my three ballot slots was Michael Penix Jr., whose transfer to Washington after an injury-plagued career at Indiana struck me as a near-perfect fit for the story of college football in 2023.With the instant media coverage of sport...
