23andMe says health data was included in hack that compromised 6.9 million users By Kristen V. Brown | BloombergSome 6.9 million 23andMe customers had their data compromised after an anonymous hacker accessed user profiles and posted them for sale on the internet earlier this year, the company said on Monday. The compromised data included users’ ancestry information as well as, for some users, health-related information based on their genetic profiles, the company said in an email.Privacy advocates have long warned that sharing DNA with testing companies like 23andMe and Ancestry makes consumers vulnerable to the exposure of sensitive genetic information that can reveal health risks of individuals and those who are related to them.In the case of the 23andMe breach, the hacker only directly accessed about 14,000 of 23andMe’s 14 million customers, or 0.1%. But on 23andMe, many users choose to share information with people they’re genetically related to — which can include distant cousins they have never met, in addition to direct family members — in order to learn ...

SF Giants trade candidates: These 7 hitters could fit in lineup NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With the free-agent market stalled so far as the baseball world awaits Shohei Ohtani’s decision, the MLB Winter Meetings this week may not feature many major signings. But with the league gathered under one very large roof at the sprawling Opryland Resort, teams can still use the opportunity to lay the groundwork for trade talks. On Monday, Farhan Zaidi said the Giants were engaged in “lots of trade conversations” while providing some insight into their plans.“Certain areas like shopping to add starting pitching at the front end of the rotation, that’s probably more likely to happen in free agency. But some of the things we’re looking to do on the position player side – athleticism, speed, defense – oftentimes trades are better avenues to accomplish those,” Zaidi said. “It’s not necessarily that simple, but I think that’s been the demarcation of our approach.”The Giants have a surplus of young starting pitching, allowing th...

It should be at your local bookstore, or you can order a copy through an independent bookstore, which I hope you’ll do. HuffPost‘s Daniel Marans is out today with a piece of news from the book: In 2018, roughly a week after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stumbled through an interview question about her criticism of the killing by Israel Defense Forces of dozens of nonviolent protesters in Gaza, her communications director got a call from AIPAC. The pro-Israel lobbying group offered her campaign $100,000 in contributions to “start the conversation” so that she would never flub the question again. AOC turned them down. What follows is a brief adapted excerpt of that section of the book, which is called “The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution.” Go get your copy!We also published an audio excerpt today in the Deconstructed podcast feed.
